What are Mood Disorders?
Several types of mental health disorders fall under the category of mood disorders. They create havoc in a person’s life because they can’t control their moods. The individual may stay stuck in a state of depression, anger, moodiness, or joy for hours or days at a time and not have the ability to become unstuck from their mood.
A person in need of treatment for mood disorders finds that over time their illness negatively impacts their personal relationships, job performance, and educational activities. In the U.S., almost one out of ten people deal with a mood disorder. This makes getting professional treatment important so they don’t suffer needlessly.
Types of Mood Disorders
A person can have any one of the following types of mood disorders:
- Bipolar Disorder
- Dysthymia
- Cyclothymic Disorder
- Major Depressive Disorder
- Seasonal Affective Disorder
- Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
- Postpartum Depression
- Substance-Induced Depression
A qualified mental health counselor will talk to each person to assess them. This helps provide an accurate diagnosis and begins the process of creating a treatment plan.
